Carlos Gonzalez: The 2009 Sleeper In The Matt Holliday Trade

Posted by on Nov 12, 2008 in Fantasy Baseball Outfielders, Fantasy Baseball Prospects, Fantasy Baseball Sleepers, Fantasy Baseball Tips | 0 comments

Now that the Oakland A’s have officially acquired Matt Holliday from the Colorado Rockies, a couple things have come to light: The fantasy value of Houston Street (now a Colorado Rockies reliever) is close to zero. Holliday will likely lose his spot atop our 2009 fantasy baseball ranking throne. Carlos Gonzalez becomes an instant 2009 fantasy baseball prospect/sleeper. We make no concessions in our love of productive hitters that play half their games in Coors Field. Gonzalez has been on our radar since joining the Oakland minor league system after being traded there from Arizona in exchange for Dan Haren. He played 85 games for the A’s in 2008, hitting .242 with four homers and 26 RBIs. He scored 31 runs and stole four bases. Gonzo also was a .286 hitter with slighty above average power over six years...

Out of the frying pan and into the fire. Just as 2009 fantasy baseball prognosticators were getting ready for a slight dip that Matt Holliday’s stats were going to take when he was on his way to the St. Louis Cardinals, the Colorado slugger is packing his bags and heading west to Oakland. Reports are coming in that the Rockies outfielder, currently our no. 1 rated OFer for 2009, will be traded to the Athletics for pitcher Greg Smith and some others. This is terrible news for Holliday’s stats and for owners who have him in a keeper league, as Oakland has one of the most pitcher-friendly parks in the majors. Holliday is a great hitter who takes full advantage of playing in the thin, mile-high air of Coors Field. Last season, he hit .321 with 25 homers, 88...

One of baseball’s best outfielders, if not the best, will almost certainly be playing in a different uniform next year. The Colorado Rockies have been actively shopping Matt Holliday, currently our no. 1 outfielder heading into 2009 fantasy baseball. The St. Louis Cardinals are the current front-runner to land the power-hitter. The major players in the proposed deal are Holliday and 2008’s biggest fantasy baseball surprise, outfielder Ryan Ludwick. So, how does this proposed trade affect the relative fantasy ratings of each of these players? Let’s start with Holliday, who is coming off his worst performance of the last three years mostly because he only played 139 games. He hit .321 with 25 home runs, 88 RBIs and 107 runs scored. Most remarkably, Holliday showed off some wheels, stealing 28 bases in 2008. If Holliday were to stay in...

The repeat of our preseason rankings for 2008 continues with our preseason outfielder rankings in 2009. Matt Holliday, Colorado Rockies outfielder, was our no. 1 rated outfielder heading into last season. After the year he had in 2008, there’s no reason to move him from the outfield throne heading into 2009. Holliday batted .321 with 25 homeruns, 88 RBI, 107 runs scored, and 28 stolen bases. As we stated in a recent post, we also love the potential that drafting Holliday brings because he plays 81 games a season in the hitter friendly confines of Coors Field. To get an idea of who we think will be the fantasy baseball superstars in the outfield next season, check out our first top 75 preseason ranking of Major League outfielders. Keep your eye on our site this week. Before its over,...
