Value picks.  Fantasy baseball is all about buying low and getting value.  Getting players that exceed the typical expectations for that player. Here’s our list of players that we’ll be targeting in our 2012 fantasy baseball draft. HITTERS Pedro Alvarez, Third Base, Pittsburgh Pirates — After a great rookie season when Pedro Alvarez hit 25 homers and drove in 104, he suffered the proverbial sophomore slump and even a mid-season demotion finishing a dismal .201 on the year.  We look for a bounce back year from Alvarez. Elvis Andrus, Shortstop, Texas Rangers —  Elvis Andrus is just 23 and his defense won’t hurt you in fantasy baseball.  Won’t give you any power, but is a consistent 35+ stolen base guy who had a career top .279 average last year. Jason Bourgeois, Outfield, Kansas City Royals — If Jason Bourgeois...

Starter Ranks Update: Carp’s Neck Disc Bulge

Posted by on Mar 21, 2012 in 2012 Fantasy Baseball, Fantasy Baseball Rankings, Fantasy Baseball Starting Pitchers | 0 comments

St. Louis ace Chris Carpenter returned to the STL from spring training with what are being described as “renewed symptoms” related to the bulging disc in his neck. Props to the St. Louis Post Dispatch for the update. These symptoms have sidelined Carpenter’s chances of taking the mound on Opening Day for the defending champs. Instead, they’re gonna go with Kyle Lohse. We’re pretty sure that improves their chances of losing their first game of the season by at least 3:1. The problem with Carp’s injury flare up is that it makes evaluating him for fantasy drafts really, REALLY tough. Consider this – in the BBBA Blogzkrieg slow auction draft (5×5 roto), I (BeeZee) was able to acquire him for only $5 (that’s as much as 60% off ESPN’s suggested AAV). If he’s back in April or even by mid-May...

Reliever Ranks Update: Balfour Breaks Top 30

Posted by on Mar 20, 2012 in 2012 Fantasy Baseball, Fantasy Baseball Rankings, Fantasy Baseball Relief Pitchers | 0 comments

With the news that Grant Balfour has been officially named the A’s closer to start the season, we decided to take a look at our top 30 fantasy baseball relievers for 2012 and make sure he is included. Balfour breaks our top 30 at no. 28, which means you can probably still get him on the wire AFTER your draft. Red Sox reliever Daniel Bard falls out of our top 30 because Balfour enters the list. If you follow our draft strategy of cornering your relief pitcher marketplace and carrying at least three closers, Balfour might be worth a last round flier even in small mixed leagues. Hard to recommend drafting him any earlier than that, though. With Brian Fuentes in the mix in Oakland, it’s going to be tough for Balfour to have the position locked down. At...

Debating Joey Bats vs. Cabrera For #1 Overall

Posted by on Mar 20, 2012 in 2012 Fantasy Baseball, Fantasy Baseball Draft, Fantasy Baseball Outfielders, Fantasy Baseball Rankings | 4 comments

Jose Bautista has the skills to go first overall in fantasy drafts; call me a homer if you want (you would be right). You might ask me if I have ever heard of Miguel Cabrera or Matt Kemp and the answer would be I have, but… Bautista MIGHT be better (a BIG might). In Yahoo! leagues, Bautista is ranked 5th – Cabrera (1), Kemp (2), Pujols (3) and Tulowitzki (4) rank ahead of him. Personally, I think Cabrera is the only other eligible first overall selection. I don’t think Kemp is going to sustain his production from last year; his BABIP was .380 which suggests he got lucky, however he is fast, so how many base hits are attributed to luck and how many are attributed to his speed I don’t know. In regards to his proclamation of a...

The Fantasy Baseball Dugout radio show from Saturday, March 10 had BallparkBob reporting live from Spring Training in Clearwater where he talked about Batting Average/Balls in Play (BABIP).  Based on the luck factor that is commonly referred to on BABIP, expect a big year out of Evan Longoria while Matt Kemp will not be able to live up to his 2011 season stats....
