Fantasy Baseball Effects of Gerald Laird / Detroit Tigers Trade
The Detroit Tigers addressed one of their major needs over the weekend when they acquired Gerald Laird from the Texas Rangers in exchange for a pair of prospects.
I’ve read a lot of fantasy bloggers talking about Laird as a useful fantasy player, but I’m not able to figure out why. Laird batted .276 with 6 homeruns, 41 RBI, 54 runs scored and 2 steals in 2008.
Even in Detroit’s lineup, I can’t see any way to move Laird into the top 20 fantasy baseball catchers for 2009. If you play in an AL-only league or a league where you have to play two catchers, then I guess you’ll have to draft Laird at some point. Otherwise, leave this guy alone in 2008.
The prospects the Rangers received in the deal are Guillermo Moscoso and Carlos Melo. Moscoso is probably closer to cracking the big league team than Melo, but neither have logged innings in MLB. Don’t add them to any sleeper or prospect lists for a year or so.
