Wanted: Fantasy Baseball Closer, New York Mets

Billy Wagner, New York MetsBilly Wagner has hit the DL for the New York Mets, and the prognosis doesn’t look good.  How long will he be out? Who’s going to replace him?

And, most importantly, how are you going to replace him on your fantasy roster?

The Suspects:
Aaron Heilman (59 G, 60.1 IP, 62 H, 38 ER, 9 HR, 28 BB, 67 K, 5.67 ERA, 1.49 WHIP, .265 BAA): Currently listed as the team’s closer, Heilman has pitched horrendously  post-all star break. His 13 ER in just 10.3 innings equates to an ERA of 11.32, WHIP of 2.42, and BAA of .356 post-break. His line from last night’s game shouldn’t change anyone’s mind, either – 0.3 innings, 2 hits, 1 walk, 3 earned runs. With just 6 career saves, this guy wouldn’t be on this list without the team saying he would close.
Advice: Avoid this guy. You shouldn’t need me to tell you that, though, his ERA should scare you enough.

Duaner Sanchez, New York MetsDuaner Sanchez (48 G, 47 IP, 40 H, 20 ER, 3 HR, 20 BB, 36 K, 3.83 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, .223 BAA): The numbers look good with Sanchez. But he has just 8 career saves, so don’t go picking this guy up just yet. In 8 games post-all star break, Sanchez has 6.2 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, which equates to a 5.40 ERA, 1.80 WHIP, .321 BAA. One key game in that stretch is against division rival Philadelphia. Wagner was not available and Johan Santana pitched 8 solid innings. Up 5-2 heading into the ninth, Sanchez allowed back-to-back-to-back hits to start the ninth and was relieved. His line of a blown save, 0 IP, 3 H, 3 ER. show’s his ability to handle pressure situations is not good.
Advice: Pass on this guy, only 8 career saves, not good for strikeouts, stick with your guns.

Pedro Feliciano
(58 G, 40.2 IP, 40 H, 17 ER, 5 HR, 18 BB, 39 K, 3.76 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, .261 BAA): Feliciano, a “LH Specialist” with 2 career saves, has also had his struggles post-all star break, allowing 6 H, 6 ER, 3 BB in 10 G, 6 IP since the break. Feliciano is only mentioned here because he is listed 3rd on the bullpen depth chart on the Mets Website, and 2nd on Yahoo! Sports.
Advice: Not a lot of IP, not a lot of K, not worth a pickup.

Scott Schoeneweis (51 G, 43.1 IP, 38 H, 15 ER, 5 HR, 18 BB, 23 K, 3.12 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, .244 BAA): Picking up his 9th career save last night, is the only reason Schoeneweis is on this list. Schoeneweis is yet another “LH Specialist” that doesn’t get enough IP, K, or save opportunities to warrant a pickup.
Advice: Not a lot of IP, not a lot of K, not worth a pickup.

Eddie Kunz, New York MetsEddie Kunz (AA Stats – 44 G, 48.1 IP, 27 SV, 39 H, 15 ER, 0 HR, 25 BB, 43 K, .279 ERA, .222 BAA): With 27 saves in the minors, Mets Manager Jerry Manuel is warming to Kunz. “I’m more apt to use him now, and see how he responds. He might be the guy. I might have the guy staring me in the face, and I’m not doing anything about it.” Kunz has made one major league appearance, allowing 1 hit in 1 IP Sunday at Houston.
Advice: With these stats, these comments, and this situation, this is the guy to pickup.
